Rewarding and mentoring Richmond’s best new business models and pitch
Richmond SCORE, in partnership with VA Bio+Tech Park and Richmond Times-Dispatch, is pleased to announce the SCOREcard 2018 Pitch Competition to determine the best business model that can lead to increased revenue and profit growth – the model and pitch that best demonstrates optimum customer and investor appeal.
First Place – $5,000
Second Place – $2,500
Third Place – $1,000
Must be a start-up or in business less than one year, defined by when first dollar of revenue was received
Business cannot be a non-profit or franchise, an extension of an existing business, or a purchase of an existing business
Contestants must reside within the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)
The competition will be executed in two parts:
Part I will examine the business model using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) format, how the business is positioned in the competitive landscape, and how the business will get off the ground. The following information should be provided:
- Name of business
- Brief executive summary
- Nine sections of the BMC, including underlying assumptions
- Competitive analysis
- Summary of financials
- Summary BMC
This information will be captured in a Competition Workbook that will be provided to registered contestants on March 19. The completed workbook must be submitted on or before April 18.
Six contestants will be selected as finalists and announced on May 4. The selections will be based on the following:
- Clear definition of business problem or need being addressed and the target customer
- Well defined go-to-market strategy
- Specific operations model
- Financial viability
- Completeness and consistency of analysis
Part II covers The Pitch Event on June 6. Each of the six selected finalists will be invited to deliver an eight-minute business pitch and answer judges’ questions. Judges will select three winners.
In addition, contestants will have the opportunity to receive training on the BMC and how to develop a pitch as well as work with a SCORE mentor throughout the competition and afterward. Richmond SCORE is an all-volunteer non-profit association that provides, at no charge, confidential advice and mentoring to startups and existing small business owners. So, win or lose, all contestants will receive valuable guidance on maximizing the potential of their businesses and an opportunity to forge a productive, long term mentoring relationship.
