Rewarding and mentoring Richmond’s best new business models and pitch

SCORE Richmond, in partnership with Activation Capital, is pleased to announce the SCOREcard 2019 Pitch Competition to determine the best business model that can lead to increased revenue and profit growth – the model and pitch that best demonstrates optimum customer and investor appeal.

Six contestants will be chosen to present a business pitch and compete for cash awards.

Cash Awards

First Place – $5,000
Second Place – $2,500
Third Place – $1,000
Runners Up - $500 each

  • Must be a start-up or in business less than one year, defined by when first dollar of revenue was received
  • Business cannot be a non-profit or franchise, an extension of an existing business, or a purchase of an existing business
  • Contestants must reside within the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)*

The competition will be executed in two parts:

Part I will examine the business model using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) format, how the business is positioned in the competitive landscape, and how the business will get off the ground. The following information will be required:

  1. Name of business
  2. Brief executive summary
  3. Nine sections of the BMC, including underlying assumptions
  4. Competitive analysis
  5. Financial Analysis

This information will be captured in a Competition Workbook that will be sent to all registered contestants on February 6. The completed workbook must be submitted on or before March 13.

The six contestants selected as finalists will be announced on April 3. The selections will be based on the following:

  1. Clear definition of business problem or need being addressed and the target customer
  2. Well defined go-to-market strategy
  3. Specific operations model
  4. Financial viability
  5. Completeness and consistency of analysis

In addition, each contestant will have the opportunity to:

  • Receive training on the BMC and on how to develop a pitch
  • Work with a SCORE mentor throughout the competition and afterword.

Part II covers The Pitch Event on April 30. Each of the six selected finalists will be invited to deliver an eight-minute business pitch and answer judges’ questions. An independent panel of judges, consisting of prominent business representatives from the Richmond area will select the winners.

Richmond SCORE is an all-volunteer non-profit association that provides, at no charge, confidential advice and mentoring to startups and existing small business owners. So, win or lose, all contestants will receive valuable guidance on maximizing the potential of their businesses and an opportunity to forge a productive, long term mentoring relationship.
